What does GLP compliance cost?

Consultants rarely publish fees, so we built this guide from published figures — an official GLP fee schedule, a 2026 GxP audit fee schedule, and a documented implementation case — each labeled with source, date, and scope.

What the published sources say

1. Official GLP fee schedule (SCC, December 2025)

The Standards Council of Canada's GLP recognition program publishes exact fees: $1,875 per professional inspection day, $1,250 per travel day, an annual program fee of $2,250–$20,250 (scaled to studies per year), and $1,350 per scope extension. These are accreditation-body fees — the closest thing GLP has to a published price list.

2. GxP audit market day rates (2026 fee schedule)

A published GxP audit fee schedule lists supplier/contractor audits at $2,250–$4,000/day and a facility audit plus mock inspection at $11,250/week. These are GMP-market figures, not GLP-specific — but the consultant labor market overlaps heavily, so they anchor our estimator's day rates.

3. A full GLP build, documented (Springer)

A published case study put implementing GLP in one research laboratory at $623,000 over 3 years: 52% internal staff and administration, 47% appraisal costs (gap analyses, external consulting, training internal QA associates), and 1% equipment. The headline: the consulting is the smaller half — your own staff time dominates.

4. The broad market statement

Industry commentary summarizes GLP certification costs as “a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars,” varying with lab size, location, consultancy involved, and how close the lab already is to compliant. Honest but vague — the detailed figures above are more useful for budgeting.

Where the money actually goes

Cost itemWhat drives it
External consulting/auditingAudit days × day rate + travel. Budget $15k–$80k for a gap assessment through a full facility audit.
Internal staff timeThe largest category (~52% in the documented case): SOP writing, QA time, study rewrites.
TrainingGLP training for staff and QA associates — plan several thousand to tens of thousands.
Facility & equipmentSmallest slice (~1% in the case study) if the lab is already modern; larger for older facilities.
Accreditation feesSCC-style schedules: inspection days, travel, annual program fee.
